Do You Get Locked Into a Contract to Rent Your Timeshare Points?

This is usually the first question owners ask.

Not how much they will make.

Whether they are locking themselves into something.

The Short Answer

It is a service agreement.

Not a contract.

You are not committing points for next year, or the year after, or on any schedule at all.

What You Are Actually Signing

The agreement covers how the service works and what happens to the points you choose to assign.

That is the scope of it.

It does not obligate you to:

  • provide a set number of points each year
  • renew anything
  • stay for a minimum term
  • assign points on a schedule

What the agreement does not do

It does not commit you to a fixed number of points, a minimum term, or any allocation in a future year.

You Decide the Number, Every Cycle

You allocate points one time, for the cycle you are in.

That is the whole commitment.

If you have a million points and you want to assign all of them, you can.

If you want to assign 300,000 and keep the rest for yourself, you can do that instead.

What Happens When That Round Is Done

Once those rentals have checked out and you have been paid, the slate is clear.

Someone reaches out and asks the same question again:

“You have your points for this year. How many do you want to start with?”

You answer with a new number.

It is not carried over from last time.

You Assign→Points Rented→You Get Paid→You Decide Again

It Works in Both Directions

You are not waiting to be contacted.

If you know what you want to do, you can call in and assign points yourself.

The point of the check-in is just to make sure nothing sits idle.

Either you use your points, or they get rented.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds

Timeshare ownership is already full of long-term obligations.

Maintenance fees. Use-year rules. Booking windows.

Most owners have been on the receiving end of a commitment that was easier to enter than to leave.

So when a rental service asks for points, the reasonable reaction is to ask what happens in year two.

Here, nothing happens in year two unless you decide it does.

What You Still Control

Assigning points does not hand over your ownership.

You still:

  • own the timeshare
  • keep whatever points you want for personal travel
  • decide the split between travel and rental each cycle
  • change that split whenever your usage changes

A Reasonable Way to Start

You do not have to decide the whole year on day one.

Some owners assign a portion first, see how the cycle goes, and adjust the next time.

That is a normal way to do it.

Final Thought

The agreement is about the service, not about locking in supply.

You are deciding what to do with points you already own, one cycle at a time.

If you want to assign fewer next year, you assign fewer.

If you want to assign none, you assign none.
